Final Plot/Storyline

Sub-genre: Psychological

Storyline/Plot:

The story revolves around a mathematical genius, who as a life-long job works as a clock maker in a small clock shop. The main story is him designing these carriage clocks and engraving a random date, time and location on the gears of the clock. He then anonymously drops off the clock at a random police station and then with some clue to the officers they decide that the clock is slightly suspicious and therefore disassemble the clock. After doing that they realize there are some unique engravings on the clockwork and then start to uncover a pattern within the markings. Eventually they put together the engravings and find a code. This code reveals a random time, date and location. As this is happening there is juxtaposition between them solving the code and clockmaker going to kill his victim. When the officers get to the scene the victim is dead and next to him/her is another clock, in which another code is engraved into the clockwork, leading to another aimless murder…

Practice Opening

This is a Practice experiment we made to test what kind of opening we were going to make

Construction of a protagonist main character

I will be creating a protagonist main character, by using these using these factors:

• Mise en scene
• Camera work
• Sound
• Proxemics

The character i will be representing is a man called Jordan Napkins he is a lifeless man from Parnard Street in America, he is a small man who goes around killing people one by one, with no goal, as he kills more and more people he gains a global reputation, with his nickname as the The Wolf Howler as he always kills around midnight.

Mise en scene 

The Costume he will be wearing will be Camouflage Trousers with a ripped black hoodie, his hair will be spiked up and he will have scars on his face, The location will be a slum city in america and he will live in a isolated area, of this city in a small street called Parnard Street, his house will be a small terrace house which will be decayed and old fashion, The set design will be dark and decayed and it will be the street that we will be filming, it will be set-up all dark and lanterns down the street, and dark doors and old iron fences, there will be over lights as most over as most of the filming will be at night so we would need light of lamp posts, to create a scary feel to the street.

Camera Work

The camera work that would be used, would be variety of different angles to make my villan look more important in the scenes, and there will be some long shots for scenes with chases and important locations were scenes will be filmed, There will also be close up shots to show important items such as the villans weapon and clues for the thriller, i will use visual hierarchy to show who's more important, and who's not important

Sound

The sound that would be used, would be string instruments because this makes the scene more tense when my main character is in it, also i would use SFX to create noises such as the wind and foot steps to create dramatic scenes, also i might use some classic music to make some of the murder scenes creepy and dark.

In this task we were given a DVD to watch mine was 'High Crimes' and we had to watch the first 2 mins and create a storyboard of the opening 2 mins, we had to draw the work on one side of the page and write on the other side.

Thriller opening sequence sound

This is our opening sequence sound clip it was created by using kitchen items such as a funnel and a colander, we used these to create creepy sounds to set a scene for our opening.

North by Northwest Opening Sequence

In the first shot we see lines appearing from the right side and crossing with lines coming down from the top this creates a windowed building kind of look, like a grid, this works well as when the text comes in it can be in line with the grid, these lines are 'converging lines'

The next shot is of more actors, sliding up and down the grids as the names come up a little white line comes up with them and then goes without stopping unlike the text I think thats there just to add something on to the page as if it was by itself.

Then the north by northwest title appears and this works well as the arrows on the 'N's point in the direction of north and north west this is a good little add as it creates a noticeable effect.

Experiment 2

First Thriller Attempt

 



This is our first attempt at a thriller opening, it is alright but it could be better as we had different costumes on in different scenes as we filmed the scenes on different days of the week, looking back at it i would have selected differnt camera angles and I would of picked a better location for the thriller opening, apart from these minor errors the rest of the work went well as the transitions between the shots fade well into each other and they run smoothly.

Visual Analysis

When watching and analysing Se7en's Title sequence all the factors present all came into a total of three sub catergories, these catergories are: Murder/Serial Killer, Gothic/Sinister Feel and Science.

Murder/Serial Killer

• There were photographs flickered through the sequence which had a forensic look about them.
  
• Planning, the person in this sequence seemed to be planning/organising the things ( photographs, samples etc. ) in his possession.
  
• Hit List?.. with some of the photographs the person would cross their eyes out with a permanent marker, this suggests that they have an order of doing things.
• Red, blood red markings or filters.
  
• DNA Samples ( hair ) one quick shot shows in the sequence shows a pen or tweezers picking up what seems to be hair.
  
• Evidence/Scrapbooking, this person seems to be making a scrapbook of all of their possessions.
  
  
  

Gothic/Sinister Feel

• The scattered and broken typeface used brings and uneasy sinister feel to the sequence. 
  
• Self harm, the person is chipping away at their fingers with a blade.
• Sharp objects, this gives a dangerous and gothic feel.
• Camera seems to be sepia, which gives an old gothic feel.
  
• Old looking books give this sequence a old times feel.

Science

• Anatomy, some images of anatomy and body parts are shown in parts of the sequence, this gives both a scientific but also a murder feel.
• Many sharp objects were present which seem to be like scalpels and other tools that scientists would use.

  Sound Analysis
  
  
  - Constant beat though out the opening titles sounds like a constant heart beat thumping in the background.
  
  
  - Electronic interference is used to confuse the viewer making them feel uneasy.
  
  
  - The beat picks up and becomes more tensioned, this is done to hypes the viewers adrenalin. 
  
  
  - More interference is introduced to confuse the viewer. 
  
  
  - Voices can be heard toward the end which again confuses the viewer, while at the same time intriguing them. 
  
  
  - Feed back can be heard throughout which to the viewer may seem like screaming. This is done to excite the viewer, making them feel uncomfortable. 
  
  
  - Radio infrequency may make people think about trying to get contact with someone. 
  
  
  - The sounds don't flow/fit together making the viewer feel uncomfortable.

The first scene we see is a close up of the water with the opening titles, and then there is a fade transition used and it cuts to a medium shot of her sitting down next to a car she has got a cigarette in her hand and she is wearing rough clothing, she also has a big cut on her face this is already giving us evidence that this is a thriller then it cuts to a close up of her face.

Then it does another fade transition to a wedding were someone is saying there vows it is a long shot of them on the at the front of the building/church it then zooms into the wedding slightly and then cuts away to an over shoulder shot of the bride and she says i do.

Then it turns to shot a shot of the man putting a ring on her finger this might be a key point in the film as you might see this ring later in the film, then it cuts to quite a loud messy scene of people getting attention by hitting glasses with spoons the camera is tilting and spinning then it cuts to the man giving a speech

Marnie Opening Sequence

The First thing we see is a book with the company name and the directors and actors, the reason they have done this book theme is because this film is based on a novel so the page turning transition is there to reinforce the viewer that this film is based on a novel, and when the book is turning the pages it has is playing some music which keeps building the tension but then bringing it down and when the title is shown it goes calm and then turns into diegetic sound which is like background noise and not noise played over the film its an ambient noise.

Then it cuts to a close up of someone carrying a bright yellow handbag and they are dressed in a grey outfit, with black hair and they are carrying a large suitcase as well, and it appears that this person is at a train station as you can see tracks, then it cuts to a man in a suit who immediately said robbed and looks and points at a safe and then it cuts to a close up of an empty safe they use a eye line shot here which is were when the actor looks at something and then it cuts to what he's looking at.

The next shot is a close up shot of the guy who was robbed and he describes how much was stolen and who did it when he is saying who did it he says her name twice so we know the detail and know the name of the possible main character also they say it twice incase anyone viewing miss heard it to make sure they definitely know the name, then he goes on to describe this lady when he is describing her it uses reverse shots so when he says something its on him and then it goes to a shot of the police and then reverses back to him.

And then a man walks in and he is taking up most the shot so you can tell he is an important character and when the other man walks up to him he is looking up to him which suggests he is a higher ranking or a more important person as he is dominant in the shot, then it tracks them to a private conversation they have when they turn there backs on the police because they want us to here this because it might be important information.

Then it cuts to a shot were she walks from the behind the camera down a hall way which looks like its in a hotel because there is a bell boy which suggest he works for the hotel, the bellboy is carrying to big parcels for this dark haired woman, as they walk away from the camera (Alfred Hitchcock appears in the shot because in all his films he appears in them) also as they walk down the hall it changes from diegetic sound to non diegetic sound.

The next shot is off the lady in her room packing two suitcases and unboxing some clothes and putting them in neatly the other she is just throwing clothes this gives me a feeling that she is throwing her old identity away and packing her new one, then it zooms in on the bag, these days zooming when filming isn't the best technique but it works in this scene, then she tips loads of money out of the bag this is a key shot as we now know she is the one that robbed that place.

Then it goes to a close up of her purse and she has many different ID's which suggests that she does these kind of tricks a lot because she many fake ID's that she uses to get a job and then rob the place and then changes her ID.

Then it cuts to a close up of this woman washing out the dye in her hair which shows us that she has been dressing differently to how she really looks so she doesn't fit the match of the suspect, then we see her face for the first time the reason we only see her face 5 mins in is it builds a little bit of suspense of what she looks like.

The next shot is a close up of her putting the old scruffy clothes bag into a locker of some sort this shows that she's dumping her old identity there and ditching it, then it shows her holding a key and she looks at a drain grill, this makes the audience immediately know what she's going to do and then another eye line shot is used because she looks at the grill and then its a close up of it., and then she drops the key into it.
